The individual task for D4, Semester Two 2019, was to design a furniture component - more specifically, a stool. This 1:1 scale making represented the final step in a series of model explorations that gradually increased in scale until we reached this furniture component at real life scale. We were tasked to design a stool for the Architecture Building we were designing, responding to the themes of the paper, such as the Barracks Wall, whilst considering the potential duality of our furniture in different applications.
My stool took precedent from early models exploring wall shape, wall thickness and of course, materiality. I achieved duality in my stool through a series of interventions - The vertical void running down the spine of my stool provides book storage in a political response to our Architecture Library being taken away. The large rectangular void that narrows towards the centre of the stool references the shape of the Gunloops in the Barracks Wall, however it also reinterprets the 'Us vs. Them' dialogue through its' symmetricality; no longer favouring either 'side'. The Basalt Keystone at centre, referencing the material and shape of the Barracks, is used not only to conceal storage beneath, but also as a connecting piece between two stools to form a table or group workspace. These further purposes were all implemented in the stool design with emphasis on the Architecture Student and their specific needs; such as storage and working space.

The Basalt Keystone when removed; revealing storage and allowing stools to be joined in series to form benches, group seating or tables.
